The Vinyl Tourist Visits
The Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley of New York State is one of the oldest collection of settlements in the United States. In the 19th century, it gave its name to one of the first important styles of classical American painting (the Hudson River School) and in the 20th century it still retains much of its romantic charm. For the record collector, it's an especially good region for those with classical tastes, as well.

  1. Rodgers Book Barn
    Rodman Road
    Hillsdale, NY 12529
    (518) 325-3610

    Rogers Book Barn

Primarily an antiquarian book shop, Rogers really is located in a barn in the countryside near Hillsdale, off the Taconic Parkway. From the Hillsdale exit, go east, turn left on Craryville Road, and follow the signs. The record stock is almost exclusively classical and jazz and the price per LP is generally $2 or so. Most of the LPs are in boxes under a table by the front door and near the top of the stairs, though in no particular order. Shaded Dogs, 6-Eyed Columbias--they're all jammed in with the Vox and Harmonia Mundis. Think of it as a treasure hunt. Because of the rural location, it may be closed during the winter snow season, so be sure to call ahead if you visit from November thru April.

  2. Rhino Records
    3 Church Street
    New Paltz, NY 12561
    (845) 255-0230

Rhino of New Paltz is a direct descendant of the original Los Angeles hot spot which also spawned the record label of the same name. The new Rhino, located just off Main Street underneath the new Barner Books and behind the Main Street Bistro, is only a third of the size of the old location, but it's still chock full of pop and rock LPs and CDs at bargain prices. Most long-time collectors will be disappointed, however, by the fairly commonplace selection. A good place, though, to fill the gaps in your not-so-rare 80's and 90's wants.

  3. John Doe Records
    347 Warren Street
    Hudson, NY 12534
    (518) 632-4273

A new shop in the Hudson Valley. To be reviewed.
