Just when you thought the stuffguy3 story was over...Even though the auction for the rare Lord Buckley 45 ended on March 19, 1999, the winner, elvissmith, was good enough to continue corresponding with me about his adventures with stuffguy3 [Tullio DiFedele of Howell, NJ]. Here are our e-mails, unedited for your consideration:

"But it's great crap!!!" (Apologies to the Firesign Theatre)
So, does this mean you won't be leaving positive feedback? <grin>
(Sorry, I couldn't resist)
Tell me more...

Well, it's just that the record was listed in "excellent condition." In
actuality there are so many pops and crackles that it is very unlistenable.
The record surface doesn't "look" so bad, but I would not call it "excellent."
His response was:
"I'm sorry your [sic] not pleased, however it is a very old recording , which is
why it is a collectors piece- not priced for it's sonic clarity, in fact it has a
book value of 200.00. You will never find that piece anywhere in better condition.
I never played it myself, just to maintain the integrity of it as a collectors item.
"It is not the type of thing you purchase for the application you are talking
about. You should have been aware of this. You need a a professionally copied CD
version of what ever song(1) you need. Even then you will probally [sic] get pops
and hiss."
Has not responded to my email since . . .
That's the story.

1. It's actually a spoken word record. And did you notice that DiFedele admits that
it has a "book value of 200.00," confirming my theory of why he deliberately
scuttled our deal? - JL

"Excellent" means "Excellent," not "looks good, but unlistenable."
> The record surface doesn't "look" so bad, but I would not call it "excellent."
Sounds like someone played it with a very worn stylus, an arm that was completely
out of alignment, or even an old 78rpm record player with a 45rpm speed and a steel
needle. I've got Theodore's "Tears From A Glass Eye..." (considered as rare as the
Buckley) in exactly the same condition.

All utter nonsense. The "book value" is $100 in Mint condition,(2) and that means
"plays perfectly."
If he won't give you a refund (or at least a 50% rebate), you know what I'd do
(and did).
BTW, may I add your story to my "stuffguy3" page?

Please add my story to your page. I wrote to him and asked for $50.00 back,
or to return the record for a refund. He hasn't responded.
